Fins and Things is the trail that makes people fall in love with Moab. It is a wild ride across a series of sandstone fins, with steep climbs that feel near vertical from the driver seat and descents that pin you against your seatbelt. The grip of slickrock is incredible, which is the only thing that makes the angles feel sane.

What to expect

The trail flows like a roller coaster. You climb a fin, crest the top with nothing but sky in the windshield, then drop down the far side and do it all again. There are bypass options around the hardest obstacles, but the main line demands confidence and good throttle control.

This is not a beginner trail. You want decent ground clearance, a low range gear set, and at least a little seat time on technical terrain before you take it on.

Highlights

  • Panoramic views of the La Sal Mountains and the Sand Flats
  • Classic Moab slickrock with grip that has to be felt to be believed
  • Steep optional obstacles for drivers who want a challenge
  • Easy access from town, perfect for a half day run

Know before you go

Fins and Things sits in the Sand Flats Recreation Area, which charges a small day use fee. Air down for grip and ride comfort. Go early to beat both the heat and the crowds, especially in spring. Summer midday temperatures are brutal and the slickrock radiates heat like an oven.

Bring more water than you think you need, keep your group tight, and take your time at the top of each fin to pick a clean line. Moab rewards patience and punishes ego.
